Database Health Checks

Comprehensive, reportable diagnostics for your database.

Database health checks are essential to your business

Pinpointing Poor Performance

A database health check examines your estate for bottlenecks, emerging issues, and opportunities to optimise performance. When rapid access to your data is essential, regular database health checks are a must.

Why Conduct A Database Health Check?

Poor database health is a serious cause for concern.

For example, poor performance directly impacts productivity, leading to rising business costs. Poor performance also poses a far higher risk of database failure, which means indefinite downtime until a replacement can be sourced and installed.

Another risk is that your database reaches its official end of life support. Using a database beyond this period is not recommended because it means that you will no longer receive  critical quality of life updates or essential security patches.

However, health checks aren’t just for troubleshooting database problems. They analyse how your databases can be expected to perform under peak conditions, which allows you to proactively plan upgrades and expand your capacity to manage growth.

Regular database maintenance can also reduce the cost of upgrades and ongoing maintenance by catching problems as they happen, instead of allowing them to accumulate until the next upgrade or migration.

What does a Database Health Check look for?

A Xynomix Database Health Check is a forensic examination of your Oracle, SQL Server, or Linux estate. We’ll assess the efficacy of your backup measures, disk space, assigned privileges, invalid logins, number of user objects, instance configurations, and much more.

Xynomix also deep-dives into your Error Log reports to analyse any trends. Plus, with a patch history review, we can ensure you’re up-to-date with all of the latest security and quality of life features.

Once the health check has been completed, our Xynomix expert compiles and delivers a full report on the findings. This includes an overall summary, areas of concern, opportunities for performance improvements, and the recommended remedial actions.

By pinpointing existing or potential pain points, your Database Health Check delivers full visibility of any emerging or long-standing issues requiring a fix.

In short, anything that could affect your overall database performance, security, and resilience is reported on in detail and highlighted for your benefit.

How our Database Health Check works

Our Database Health Check is a low-impact review of the structure of your Oracle or SQL Server instances.

There are a wide array of diagnostic tools available for assessing database performance, but at Xynomix we use our own assessment, designed and developed in-house by our expert DBAs.

Every Database Health Check is carried out and watched to completion by a Xynomix DBA. We then manually check over certain aspects that are not captured in the health check. This has zero impact on the users. For example our team typically analyses the overall instance configuration to check the memory settings, parallelism settings, and more.

It’s essential to choose a reputable partner with a good track record because health checks do involve granting access to an organisation’s most confidential data. Xynomix is certified to Cyber Essentials and ISO-27001; plus, we’re also trusted to handle sensitive data for the Ministry of Defense and a range of NHS Trusts.
