Running an Oracle Database?

Whether you’re on version 11g, 21c, or anything in between – it’s prudent to keep an eye on the extended support deadlines.

It’s worth noting that not all versions of Oracle Database are eligible for extended support, meaning that database support will end following the mandatory five-year period offered by Oracle.

We’ve compiled all of the latest Oracle database extended support deadlines in our dedicated roadmap – so you don’t have to.

What Are The Three Types Of Support For Oracle Database?

Premier Support

Oracle Database Premier Support lasts for a mandatory five years from the original release of the database version.

Extended Support

Oracle Database Extended Support lasts for an additional three years, bringing overall support up to eight years.

However, Oracle does not offer extended support for every version. See the full roadmap of Extended Support Deadlines below for more details.

Market-Driven Support

Oracle Database Market-Driven Support is a exceptional support package, offered very rarely. This is a paid support service that lasts indefinitely, depending on demand.

Support could end at any point, plus it involves recurring costs, so relying on market-driven support is not recommended.

Why Does The Extended Support Deadline Matter?

If running an Oracle Database estate, it’s essential to keep an eye on the extended support deadlines.

For a start, running any end of life software after support has ended poses grave security risks. Without security patch updates from Oracle, there is an increased risk of a cyber attack or data loss.

Secondly, system performance will be impacted. Incremental updates provide stability for your database, so once these end, a database’s performance will begin to spiral downwards – sometimes rapidly. This affects BAU (business as usual) and puts organisations at increased risk of downtime.

Finally, it also means missing out on improvements and quality of life features available in newer versions of Oracle database. The end of extended support is usually to encourage Oracle database users to migrate to the latest version.

To bolster security, guarantee strong performance, and benefit from quality of life updates, it’s always best to migrate to the latest version of Oracle. This is why keeping an eye on extended support deadlines is highly recommended.

What are my Options If Extended Support has Already Expired?

Once Oracle Extended Support ends, your estate will automatically fall into Sustaining Support status.

At this point, you could look into whether Market-Driven Support is available for your version. However, this is a paid extra which is offered only infrequently.

The recommended option is upgrade to a more current version of Oracle database*. This way, you’ll benefit from years of performance and security improvements, whilst benefiting from new features.

If your Oracle Extended Support has expired, it’s best to get in touch with an independent database consultant for advice on your next steps.

*If you’re running RAC on Oracle 18c Standard Edition, beware. Oracle 19c no longer offers RAC on SE2. We’ve laid out alternatives in our 7 Options for Migrating SE2 and RAC to Oracle 19c guide.
